Bike To Work Week Celebration

7/12/12 – Active Transportation threw their annual Bike Commuter Challenge Team Leader party this year at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (seen below).

The Notebaert Nature Museum is a great spot to take young urbanites to get a taste of the beauty of nature and to learn a bit about it as well. They also host wonderful events such as the team leader party and the Winter Green City Market – one of only two all-year farmer’s markets in Chicago.

It was fun to see all the team leaders there and to meet some of the hard-working crew at Active Transportation Alliance – fun to see so many people excited about and working hard toward making biking safer and easier in Chicagoland.

Some of the stats from this year’s challenge:

  • 467 Teams (2nd best out of the 22 years of the existence of the challenge)
  • 6,813 Commuters
  • 40% of the Commuters were women! Yay, I love my fellow lady-riders! And as they said, when so many women feel safe biking, that is a very good sign.
  • Biggest team – Groupon
  • Most Mileage – University of Chicago

A few of the evening’s presenters:

Prizes – such as a brand-new Schwinn – were given away, pizza & salad were piled high on plates, and new friendships were formed at this wonderful event. Thanks Active Trans for all you do!

This is an exciting time for biking in Chicago. As Mayor Emmanuel and CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein lead the infrastructure redesign of  over a hundred miles of streets and as organizations such as Active Transportation Alliance push for programs like Open Streets, the city is experiencing what is commonly being referred to as a “biking renaissance.” To learn more and/or to get involved check out the below links:
